International Archives week 2025

International Archives week 2025 was held from the 9th to 13th of June, with the 9th of June marking International Archives Day. This year’s theme, as announced by International Council on Archives (ICA), is: Archives for Everyone #archivesareaccessible.

The purpose of this year’s theme is to recognise the crucial role of accessibility in the digital transformation of archives and their ability to reach audiences worldwide.

Archives and archivists perform an integral role in the Australian community, supporting our democratic values and our fundamental human rights by providing access to sources of truth. Records and other archival materials can help the community to demand accountability and transparency, uphold democracy, preserve heritage, memory and support society as a whole.

During International Archives week we can see how Australian archives fits into the global archival community, showcase our innovations, and learn from the insights and advancements of our international colleagues.

As society and the digital age continues to evolve, archives must also change to better meet the needs of the time. The theme Archives for Everyone aims to highlight how archivists, archives, records managers and institutions globally are leveraging new technologies to remove barriers and allow easier access to their collections. This allows people to engage with knowledge, culture and history more effectively.

This transformation is being achieved through various initiatives, including the use of digital platforms and online archives, digitisation projects and innovative preservation techniques. The ultimate goal is to have archival materials be accessible to all, regardless of physical limitations or geographical location.
